This week, with accuracy top of mind, we’re going to focus on golfers at the top of their games -- guys coming into the Wyndham red hot in the ball striking category. We love our ball strikers, don’t we folks?
Cam Davis ($8,800): With two top-20 finishes in two of his past three starts (please ignore the missed cut at the Genesis Open), Davis is scorching headed into Wyndham. Narrow in on the past eight rounds and Davis is first in ball striking among players in the Wyndham field (he ranks a not-hateful 20st in this week’s Topher model). Davis is second on approach and 12th off the tee over the past eight rounds. Zoom out to the past 20 rounds and Davis is still top-10 in ball striking. A mere five golfers in this week’s field have gained more total strokes at Sedgefield Country Club than Davis. At $8,800, he could very well be a forgotten man at Wyndham.
Trevor Cone ($6,500): Fourteenth in this week’s Topher model, Cone is striping it off the tee and from the fairway, where he so often finds himself over the past month. Cone, second in ball striking trend headed into the Wyndham, is sixth in approach and fourth off the tee over the past eight rounds, which made cuts in four of his past five events. His putting has mostly been a nightmare, but what can you do? His short game shortcomings are probably why Cone is a meager $6,500 this week. He hasn’t only been hot over the past couple weeks. Cone is a solid 15th in ball striking among players in this field over the past 30 rounds. Playing Cone creates plenty of roster flexibility if you’re trying to jam two or three high-priced guys into your Wyndham lineups.
Denny McCarthy ($8,700): McCarthy, who hasn’t teed it up since missing the cut at the British Open last month, was doing Denny McCarthy stuff before that disappointing outing overseas. He logged three top-10 finishes in four events before the British on the strength of accurate driving and the kind of putting you might get if you had wishes granted to you by a genie. McCarthy is 18th in this week’s model and 17th in ball striking among players in the Wyndham field. Only eight players have been better off the tee over the past month. By many measures McCarthy is the best putter on the planet. He’s seventh among this week’s field in strokes gained on 5-10 foot putts; he’s sixth from 10-15 feet. That could come in handy if the Wyndham turns into an old-fashioned putting contest.
